Are we crazy? Honestly, there were definitely moments I questioned our sanity! Living through a 12-month renovation is not for the faint of heart — but we did it. And now that it’s over, I want to share the five biggest things I wish I had known before we started.

(Looking for something specific from our renovation? Check out our favorites HERE)

    1. Your Living Space Disappears

We didn’t have a living room for six months. Six! I thought we’d miss it, but I didn’t realize just how much it would affect our daily lives. Family movie nights, holiday gatherings, even just a spot to curl up with a book — gone.

    2. Noise and Dust Become Your New Roommates

There was constant noise, constant dust, and pretty much zero quiet. Every day brought a new kind of chaos — hammering, sawing, sanding, you name it. I never realized how much I rely on peace and quiet until it was impossible to find.

    3. Privacy Is a Luxury

When your house is full of workers and half the rooms are under construction, there’s nowhere to go to be alone. I felt overstimulated almost all the time. It’s a different kind of exhaustion that no one really warns you about.

    4. Staying Put Has Major Benefits

So why didn’t we just move out? Honestly, keeping our kitchen made all the difference. We could still cook, eat together, and feel somewhat normal. Plus, we saved at least $25,000–$35,000 by not paying rent somewhere else. And because I was living here, I was involved in every single decision — catching mistakes early, checking quality, and making sure everything was done right.

    5. The Inconvenience Is Worth It

Would I do it again? Yes. While it wasn’t exactly “fun,” the pros outweighed the cons. We got the home we wanted, I know the quality of the work inside and out, and we saved a lot of money in the process.

If you’re thinking about renovating and wondering whether to stay or go, my advice is: weigh your priorities. For us, the inconvenience was intentional, and ultimately worth it.

Living through a renovation isn’t easy, but it can be done — and if you’re considering it, feel free to ask me anything!
