Growing up, my parents always made sure community service wasn’t just something we talked about – it was something we lived. Those moments shaped me, and now Cody and I are doing our best to pass the same values on to our kids.

This weekend, our church hosted a wreath-decorating event for homebound parishioners, and it ended up being one of those small, powerful reminders of what the holidays are really about. We set up decorating stations, gathered supplies, and kicked off the morning with a beautiful breakfast spread from Fresh Market (details below!). Families came together, shared stories, laughed, crafted, and watched their kids pour love into every ribbon and branch.

After the decorating was done, each family delivered a finished wreath to someone who can’t easily leave their home. Seeing the kids light up as they handed over their wreaths — and seeing the joy on the recipients’ faces – was the sweetest full-circle moment.

Giving back doesn’t have to be complicated. Sometimes it’s as simple as showing up, creating something beautiful, and reminding someone that their community hasn’t forgotten them. These are the traditions I hope my kids carry with them long after the holidays are over.

5 Meaningful Ways to Give Back in Your Community This Season

If you’re looking for simple ways to spread a little joy this month, here are a few ideas to get you started:

    1. Volunteer at a local soup kitchen or food pantry
Help prep meals, serve families, or organize donations — even one hour makes a difference.
    2. Visit or carol at a nursing home
Gather friends or kids to sing carols, read stories, or just spend time with residents who may not have family nearby.
    3. Create care packages for homebound neighbors
Include small treats, handwritten notes, or seasonal goodies and drop them off with a smile.
    4. Support a toy or coat drive
Pick out a few items as a family and talk about why giving matters — a great teaching moment for kids.
    5. Offer your time at community events
Churches, schools, and local nonprofits often need help with holiday activities, decorating, or deliveries.

A little kindness goes a long way – and the memories you make while serving together are the ones that last.

Serving our community has always been such a meaningful part of the season for our family, and I’m always inspired by the ways others give back. If you have a tradition or a favorite way to volunteer, share it in the comments, I’d love to hear what you do and gather a few new ideas for next year.
