The summer mom guilt has officially arrived over here, and we’re only a few days into summer break.

I love having my kids home. I love slower mornings, pool days, popsicles on the porch, and all the little moments that make summer feel special. But if I’m being honest, balancing work, motherhood, and the pressure to make summer magical can feel like a lot sometimes.

Every year I seem to start summer with a long list of things I want to do, places I want to go, and memories I want to create. Then reality sets in, and I remember that what my kids need most isn’t a perfectly planned summer—they need a mom who isn’t completely overwhelmed.

So this year, instead of trying to do everything, I’m focusing on creating a better morning rhythm.

Not a strict schedule. Not a color-coded routine.

Just enough structure to help our days start well while still keeping mornings slower and less rushed.

Right now our mornings are looking something like this:

☀️ 5:30–7:00 → Early work block

☀️ 7:15 → Patio breakfast together

☀️ 7:30–8:45 → Workout + independent play

☀️ 8:45 → Quick kitchen reset + kid chores

It’s definitely not perfect, and I know it’ll take us some time to fully find our groove this summer. But I’m hoping a few simple systems will help our days feel a little lighter.

One thing that’s non-negotiable for me during the summer is making time to move my body.

I know that might sound counterintuitive when the kids are home all day and schedules feel less predictable, but I’ve learned that when I take care of myself first, I’m able to show up better for everyone else. My workouts aren’t about trying to look a certain way—they’re about having more energy, more patience, a better mood, and feeling strong enough to keep up with everything summer brings.

One of the reasons I love working out at home is that it works with this season of life. There’s no commute to a gym, no arranging childcare, and no added stress. Some days the kids play independently while I work out. Some days they join me for a few exercises. Some days they climb on me during pushups and turn the whole thing into a game.

And honestly? I love that they get to see it.

Our kids learn so much from what we model. When they see us making movement a regular part of our day, they learn that exercise isn’t a punishment or something we do to “earn” our food. It’s simply part of taking care of ourselves.

It’s become one of my favorite parts of our summer mornings—a chance to fill my own cup while showing my kids what healthy habits can look like in real life.

If you’re looking for simple, effective workouts you can do from home, I’ve linked my favorite workout program here:

Another thing that always helps is having easy breakfasts ready to go. The less decision-making first thing in the morning, the better.

Some of our favorite summer breakfasts right now include:

  • Breakfast sandwiches or wraps (a family favorite!)
  • Yogurt parfaits with fresh berries and granola
  • Protein smoothies
  • Overnight oats
  • Egg muffins made ahead for the week
  • Sausage Pancake Bites

And when it comes to lunches and snacks, having a simple meal plan makes such a difference.

My goal this summer isn’t to create a perfectly planned season. It’s to create a home that feels peaceful, connected, and fun—without feeling like I have to entertain my kids every minute of every day.

Some days we’ll have adventures.

Some days we’ll stay home.

Some days will feel productive, and some days won’t.

And that’s okay.

If you’re feeling the summer mom guilt too, know you’re not alone. We’re all figuring it out one day at a time.
