Thanksgiving Day has always felt like the real kickoff to the holiday season in our home. Before the cooking starts, before the table is set, before the relatives roll in – we love slowing down and making the morning feel special, cozy, and fun. And the best part? It doesn’t require much work at all.
If you’ve got little ones, a busy kitchen ahead, or just want to create a peaceful, memory-filled moment at home, here are a few simple traditions we love that make Thanksgiving morning feel like an experience all on its own.
A Make Ahead Breakfast You’ll Thank Yourself For
The last thing any of us need on Thanksgiving morning is another recipe to tackle. That’s why I always prep my Make-Ahead Breakfast Bake the night before. It’s hearty, comforting, and slides right into the oven while the parade begins.
You can mix it up after the kids go to bed, cover it, and bake it first thing in the morning—no rushing, no stress. Just warm, savory goodness filling the house before the chaos of the big meal.
Grandma’s Cinnamon Rolls
If you want something sweet to balance the breakfast bake, homemade cinnamon rolls are a must. My cinnamon roll recipe is soft, gooey, and unbelievably good – and you can prep the dough ahead of time too.
They feel like such a luxury but truly require very little effort, which is exactly the energy we need on Thanksgiving morning.
Fall Simmer Pot
Nothing makes the house feel like Thanksgiving quite like a simmer pot on the stove. The scent of oranges, cinnamon, cloves, and rosemary drifting through the house is the easiest way to make the morning feel intentional and warm.
Throw everything into a pot, let it barely bubble on the stove, and the whole home will smell like fall.
Now for my favorite part – the parade!
We always watch the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade together, but this year we’re adding something fun: a DIY table parade for the kids.
Using balloons, cut-outs, and a few simple decorations, you can turn your breakfast table into its own mini parade route. It keeps the kids entertained, sparks creativity, and makes the morning feel like a real kickoff celebration.
It pairs perfectly with cozy pajamas, cinnamon rolls, and the big parade happening on TV.
The beauty of Thanksgiving morning is how slow it can be before the busyness begins. A cozy breakfast, warm smells from the stove, the parade on TV, and little moments of creativity with the kids – that’s what makes this day feel magical.
And none of it requires extra stress or complicated prep. Just small traditions that you’ll look forward to year after year.
